Dedicated to Barbara
We often hear talk about the “Greatest Gift”, which often turns out to be the
love one person gives another. I for one would never debate the beauty, or
value of the gift of love. I would though suggest that there is an even greater
gift. There is a gift that is more enduring, one that transcends time, and
enables a person to achieve more than they have before. I have been fortunate
enough to receive this gift. In my case though conversation, and discussion on
a personal level. My presenter delivered the same gift to many others, through
the class room, through decision making talks, through comments and suggestions.
Most often we don’t realize the impact until we stand alone, step into a new
situation or position, or perhaps are confronted with conflict. It comes to us
as a feeling. Perhaps of empowerment, or that we feel capable, or that we know
how to deal with a situation. Once acquired it is not something that can be
taken from us by force. We can only lose it by choice. This gift is
self-confidence.
With it we can love, we can achieve, we can overcome, and we
can endure. We can share it with others to better their lives. We can teach it
and promote it to improve people and a community. It will persist long after
those that have given it pass out of our lives. It will enable people to
succeed where they did not think it was possible and to try what they never
before considered. I believe it is the greatest gift of all.
