Freedom
I decided to go for a walk today. Often living in a city with people all around
causes us to loose touch with civilization. The walk seemed a way to recapture
this connection with humanity. As I walked, I sensed a feeling of openness or
perhaps a release from the tension of society. Then I saw a butterfly drifting
gracefully in the gentle breeze. It moved first up, then quickly to the left.
No rules applied and the movements were tied to nature and the butterfly’s
desires. It filled me with a sense of freedom. What I witnessed was an
ungoverned choice of actions. Curious how often we complain about losing
freedom in our societies today, while we can observe such freedom everywhere
around us in nature. Then while watching the butterfly a small bird zipped by
and snatched up the butterfly. How like man’s own situation I reflected. The
butterfly’s fate came from being too relaxed and not ensuring its rights
through constant vigilance of its surroundings. Perhaps this is the lesson we
need to heed. We often neglect the assumed responsibilities of freedom. Rather
than fussing over a presumed loss of freedom, we need to commit our
resources to maintaining this priceless possession. We must provide the actions
to defend this benefit, rather than just talking about it. So often we take
for granted what we value most, while failing to work for its preservation. We
need to focus our priorities to ensure our desired goals remain realities.
